Dana 5. maja 1821. godine umro je Napoleon Bonaparte, jedan od najvećih osvajača u povijesti svijeta. Smrt se dogodila u zarobljeništvu, na britanskom otoku Sveta Helena, usred Atlantskog oceana (između Afrike i Južne Amerike). Kad je umro, Napoleonu je bila samo 51 godina, pa postoje sumnje da je otrovan.
Napoleon je na Svetoj Heleni proveo zadnjih šest godina života. Britanci su mu dali slabo održavanu kuću, u gotovo ruševnom stanju. Napoleonov tamničar bio je otočni guverner Hudson Lowe. Napoleon je živio u gotovo mučeničkim uvjetima, u vlažnoj kući, a guverner mu je nametao stalna ograničenja. Čak su se i neki britanski parlamentarni zastupnici pobunili i zastupali mišljenje da prema Napoleonu treba postupati bez suvišne grubosti.
Napoleonov lični doktor, Irac Barry O’Meara konstatirao je da se Napoleon razbolio upravo zbog loših uvjeta zatočeništva. Na današnji dan Napoleon je umro nakon što se ispovjedio, pričestio i dobio posljednju pomast u prisutnosti svećenika Angea Vignalija. Posljednja Napoleonova riječ bila je navodno “Joséphine” (ime njegove voljene prve supruge).
Prilikom autopsije kao uzrok smrti određen je želučani tumor. Kasnije su se razvile mnoge teorije o trovanju, naročito arsenom, što se dokazivalo time što je Napoleonovo tijelo dugo nakon smrti ostalo dobro sačuvano (arsen je jak konzervans). Početkom 21. stoljeća testirani su uzorci Napoleonove kose i otkrivena je 100 puta viša doza arsena od normalne.
Međutim, kasnije su testirani i uzorci kose iz mladosti i pronađeno je da je razina arsena bila već tada 100 puta viša od normalna. Napoleon je, dakle, od mladih dana dolazio u doticaj s arsenom, vjerojatno iz tadašnjih boja i ljepila. Time je trovanje arsenom za sada odbačeno kao uzrok smrti.
