Danas se obilježava Međunarodni praznik rada

Prvi je maj, Međunarodni praznik rada, koji se obilježava na dan kada su radnici u Chicagu 1886. štrajkom i protestima počeli da se bore za osmosatno radno vrijeme.

Prvi maj, Međunarodni praznik rada, predstavlja dan solidarnosti radnih ljudi cijelog svijeta.

Slavi se od 1890. godine nakon odluke donesene na 1. Kongresu II Internacionale u Parizu, jula 1889. godine. Povod toj odluci bio je krvlju ugušen štrajk 40 hiljada čikaških radnika, 1. maja 1886. godine.

Oni su tražili 8 sati rada, 8 sati odmora i 8 sati za kulturno uzdizanje. Kongres je odlučio da svake godine 1. maja radnička klasa manifestira demonstracijama svoju solidarnost u borbi za osmosatni radni dan.

Već 1890. i narednih godina 1. maj se proslavljao masovnih mitinzima i demonstracijama proleterijata, kao i sukobima s policijom.

U Francuskoj, na primjer, samo u Parizu je učestvovalo više od 100 hiljada radnika. U našoj zemlji prve demonstracije održane su 1906. godine. Nakon II Svjetskog rata 1. maj počeo se slaviti u znaku borbe za očuvanje svjetskog mira.
