Gradašćević: “Ko me u ovi čas ne bude u vojsku slidio, mater ću mu derat
Osam konja poginulo je pod Zmajem. Mahmud-paša imao je goleme gubitke i u času kad je htio okrenuti natrag, stigoše mu u pomoć Hercegovci pod Rizvanbegovićem i Čengićem.

Husein je prvih dana svibnja stigao u Sarajevo i tu očekivao povratak svoga delegata iz Beča i radi toga zatezaše polazak vojske u susret Kara Mahmudu.
Kad je ovaj stigao u neposrednu blizinu grada, izgleda da je Husein bio potpuno uvjeren u neuspjeh otpora i, kao da je u ovoj nezgodi i zaboravio na bosanski ponos, predloži da se pred Mahmud-pašu izašalje nekoliko pametnih ljudi iz Šehera “s darovima i mitom” da s njim pregovaraju.
Ovaj prijedlog uvrijedi ponos bosanskih pretorijanca i golim sabljama u rukama svi u jedan glas graknuše: “Ko od toga prid Mahmud-pašu poslanja progovori, derat ćemo mu mater.”
Husein na ovo odmah na noge skoči pa svima reče: “Kad vi meni tako slobodno odgovarate, i ja vama svima velim: “Ko me u ovi čas ne bude u vojsku slidio, ja ću mu mater derat i mojom rukom glavu osići.”
On se je odmah bacio na konja i uputio prema Palima ne obazirući se ni na koga, “a za njime svi ostali kao pomamni vuci”.
Po odlasku Huseinovu stigao je iz Beča Starčević s pismom cara Franje u kojem se preporučuje da se sultanu podloži, a ostalo će on (car Franjo) kod sultana namjestiti.
Zadnji dan svibnja potukao je Mahmud-paša Huseina i njegovu vojsku na Palima. Mahmud-paša opremi 2. lipnja pismo iz Ljubogošće franjevcima u Fojnicu. U njem javlja svoju pobjedu nad Huseinom, koji je pobjegao. Nalaže da se javi narodu da nipošto ništa u Sarajevo ne nose i ne idu, jer je Sarajevo blokirano, pa bi takovi odmah bili osuđeni na smrt i preporučuje Aliju Raizvanbegovića i njegovu vojsku.
Nakon poraza na Palima, Husein je bio potpuno uvjeren da su mu dani odbrojeni ali, prije no ostavi Sarajevo, odluči još jednom ogledati se s vezirom.
Na Zlom Stupu podrug sat od Sarajeva porazi ga ponovo Mahmud-paša.
U društvu s Ali-pašom Fidahićem, Mujagom Zlatarevićem i još nekim svojim vjernim pristašama zametne 4. lipnja posljednju bitku pred zidinama Sarajeva. Rame uz rame borili su se s njim Fidahić i Zlatarević.
