Prvi umjetni bubreg na svijetu bi mogao osloboditi ljude od dijalize

Bolne i neugodne dijalize bi mogle postati prošlost zahvaljujući inovativnom umjetnom bubregu čiji je prototip već uspješno demonstriran u SAD-u.

Prema dostupnim podacima, bolest bubrega uzrokuje više smrtnih slučajeva od raka dojke ili prostate, a iako su transplantacije moguće, potražnja je uvijek veća od količine dostupnih organa. Također, postoji rizik i da bi tijelo pacijenta moglo odbaciti organ pa je stoga dijaliza i dalje najodrživija opcija iako je proces komplikovan i zamoran za pacijente.

Međutim, tome bi mogao doći kraj jer su američko ministarstvo zdravlja i socijalnih usluga SAD-a (HHS) te Američko udruženje za nefrologiju (ASN) formirali partnerstvo s namjerom da “ubrzaju inovacije u prevenciji, dijagnozi i liječenju bolesti bubrega”, a rezultat njihovog zajedničkog života je prvi vještački bubreg.

Izum je razvijen u okviru projekta Kidney Project, a riječ je o implantabilnom bio-umjetnom bubregu koji je već dobio nagradu od 650.000 dolara za prvu demonstraciju funkcionalnog prototipa.

“Vizija za umjetni bubreg je da omogući pacijentima potpunu mobilnost i bolje fiziološke ishode od dijalize. Ovaj bubreg obećava mnogo bolji kvalitet života za milione osoba širom svijeta koje su doživjele zatajenje bubrega”, navodi se u saopćenju.

Prednost bubrega je to što ne izaziva reakciju imunološkog sistema, kao i činjenica da bi pacijenti mogli biti oslobođeni često bolnih i neugodnih dijaliza, kao i lijekova koji potiskuju imunitet u slučajevima transplantacije bubrega.
