Zemljino magnetsko polje u petak će pogoditi geomagnetska oluja – fenomen koji može utjecati na elektromreže, satelite i avionske linije i prouzročiti zastoj čitavog svijeta.
Geomagnetska oluja je privremeno ometanje Zemljine magnetosfere, a uzrokuju je Sunčeve aktivnosti – udarni val i oblak magnetskog polja Sunčevog vjetra zajedno sa Sunčevim bakljama i koronalnim izbacivanjem mase zajedno napadaju Zemljino magnetsko polje 3 dana nakon Sunčevih aktivnosti. Geomagnetne oluje obično traju dan ili dva, ali mogu trajati i danima.
Geomagnetsku oluju koja će u petak, 19. siječnja, pogoditi Zemlju, Američki centar za predviđanje vremenskih prilika u svemiru i Agencija za proučavanje oceana i atmosfere (NOAA) klasificirali su kao G-1. Na njihovoj skali to je geomagnetna oluja najslabije jačine. No, priopćili su kako bi svejedno mogla prouzročiti “slabe oscilacije na mrežnim stanicama i manji utjecaj na satelitske operacije, kao i na životinje koje migriraju”.
Strah od geomagnetskih oluja nije neopravdan. Oluja kategorije G-5 utjecala bi na električnu energiju i sigurnosne sustave diljem svijeta – moglo bi doći do potpunog urušavanja sustava računalnih mreža i velikih oštećenja na električnim transformatorima što bi prouzročilo nestanak struje diljem Zemlje. Oluja jačine G-5 može naštetiti i radio valovima i tako stvoriti potpuni kaos u društvu – ne bi radili mobilni telefoni, GPS ni internet.
