Utakmicu bolje otvara Hrvatska. Prvih deset minuta Francuzi se nisu mogli sastaviti s loptom, a na drugoj strani Hrvatska je imala nekoliko odličnih prodora preko Perišića i Vrsaljka i pokušaj Rebića, ali odbrana Trikolora je bila na visini zadatka.
Ipak, prvi do gola dolaze Francuzi. Igrala se 18. minuta kada je Girezmann ubacio iz prekida, a Mandžukić zatresao svoju mrežu. U 28. minuti nakon dobre akcije Hrvatska dolazi do izjednačenja, sjajno je šutirao i pogodio Ivan Perišić.
U 39. minuti, Perišića je lopta pogodila u ruku, a nakon pregledavanja VAR-a sudija Pitanna pokazuje na bijelu tačku. Siguran realizator za novo vodstvo Francuske od 2:1 bio je Griezmann, a to je bio i rezultat prvog poluvremena.
U nastavku prvi prijete Francuzi preko Griezmanna u 46. minuti, ali Subašić brani njegov udarac. Minut kasnije na drugoj strani pokušava Rebić, no Lloris sjajno brani.
U 60. minuti Pogba lijepim udarcem dovodi Francuze u vodstvo od 3:1, da bi šest minuta kasnije Mbappe povisio na 4:1. U 69. minuti komičan gol prima Lloris. Pokušao je predriblati Mandžukića, no hrvatski centarfor je bio skoncetrisan i uspio je smanjiti na 4:2.
Nakon gola Mandžukića šansa za Kramarića, ali blokirao je Umtiti njegov udarac. Do kraja utakmice još par poluprilika na obje strane, ali ostalo je 4:2 i Trikolori su nasljedili Nijemce na krovu svijeta.
