Prije 96 godina rođen je Alija Izetbegović, prvi predsjednik međunarodno priznate države BiH
Na današnji dan 8. augusta 1925. godine rođen je Alija Izetbegović, prvi predsjednik međunarodno priznate države Bosne i Hercegovine i vrhovni komandant Armije RBiH tokom agresije na BiH od 1992. do 1995. godine, te prvi predsjednik Stranke demokratske akcije (SDA).
Izetbegović je rođen u Bosanskom Šamcu, a odrastao je i školovao se u Sarajevu, gdje je i diplomirao na Pravnom fakultetu.
Zbog svojih čvrstih političkih opredjeljenja u dva navrata bio je osuđivan i zatvaran, najprije 1946. godine, a zatim i 1983. godine u politički montiranom “Sarajevskom procesu”, kada je kao prvooptuženi u grupi od 13 muslimanskih intelektualaca osuđen na 14 godina zatvora.
Dobitnik je niza priznanja i nagrada, kao što su Nagrada Kralja Fejsala za služenje islamu, medalje Centra za demokratiju iz Washingtona, a najutjecajniji španski list, madridski “El Mundo”, izabrao ga je 1995. za ličnost godine u svijetu.
Govorio je nekoliko jezika, među kojima su i njemački, francuski i engleski. Autor je većeg broja publicističkih radova i studija, te svjetski priznatih knjiga među kojima su najpoznatije “Islam između istoka i zapada”, “Problemi islamskog preporoda” i “Islamska deklaracija”, zbog koje je završio u zatvoru. Godine 1999. objavio je knjigu “Moj bijeg u slobodu”, a 2000. godine knjigu “Sjećanja”.
Tokom rata od 1992. do 1995. godine Izetbegović je pokušavao održati dobre veze i s Istokom i sa Zapadom. Bio je izuzetno cijenjen u političkim krugovima kao primjer tolerantnog i mudrog političara, primjer modernog demokrate.
U svom posljednjem javnom nastupu, Izetbegović je poručio građanima BiH da “Srbi budu Srbi, Bošnjaci – Bošnjaci, Hrvati – Hrvati, ali da svi budu malo više Bosanci”, te da je važno da je “Bosna opstala”.
Oni koji su ga dobro poznavali govorili su da je bio spokojan u svojim posljednjim danima, ali da je bio staložen i razborit čovjek i u najtežim danima za Bosnu i Hercegovinu.
Umro je 19. oktobra 2003. godine i ukopan na Šehidskom mezarju Kovači u Sarajevu. Dženazi je prisustvovalo više od 100.000 ljudi, među kojima su bili i brojni međunarodni i domaći zvaničnici.
