Pobjednički gol zabio je Harry Kane u 104. minuti, i to nakon što mu je sjajni Kasper Schmeichel obranio jedanaesterac, a ovaj odbijanac pospremio u mrežu.
Međutim, ono što izaziva tugu i baca veliku sjenu na englesku pobjedu dogodilo se par minuta prije. Sterling je pao kao pokošen u jednom bezazlenom dulelu u kaznenom prostoru, dojam je da ga Jensen nije ni taknuo, no nizozemski sudac Danny Makkelie bez razmišljanja je pokazao na bijelu točku.
“Baš sam tužan i emotivno potrošen. Ovo što se večeras dogodilo je neprihvatljivo i skandalozno! Dosuditi ovakav kazneni udarac mimo konteksta i ritma utakmice gdje gotovo kontakta i nema, meni je apsolutno neprihvaljivo i od glavnog suca i od VAR sobe”, rekao je u uvodu Strahonja pa dodatno objasnio:
“Ovdje, ljudi dragi, ne postoji kontakt i ako je već sudac nasjeo na ovaj pad Sterlinjga, onda je VAR soba morala javiti glavnom sucu da promijeni odluku. Pa ovo je polufinale, dosuditi ovakvu odluku je skandalozno! On je donio odluku iste sekunde i u tom je trenutku imao obavezu prenijeti VAR sobi što je vidio, on je očito rekao da je bio udarac. Oni su u VAR sobi vidjeli kontakt, ali što su oni tu vidjeli? Ako je to za njih kazneni udarac, ti ljudi više nikad ne bi smjeli ući u VAR sobu! Oni su mu očito rekli na mikrofon da je njegova odluka u redu, što je potpuno krivo. Ja ne znam kako se to moglo dogoditi. Ovo neće biti nikome objašnjeno, teško mi je uopće išta više reći jer je sve jasno, apsolutno neprihvatljiva odluka”, zaključio je Strahonja, a s njim su se složili i sukomentatori Robert Prosinečki i Anton Samovojska.
“Ma kakav penal, sudac je pogriješio, ja to ne bih sudio nikad”, rekao je Veliki Žuti, a Vojska poentirao:
“Ovo je tužno gledati i na ovoj utakmici će ostati ne velika, nego ogromna mrlja!”.
