HISTORIJSKI TRENUTAK Ilhan Omar i Rashida Tlain prve muslimanke izabrane u američki Kongres
WASHINGTON, (Patria) – Na jučerašnjim izborima u SAD-u prvi put u historiji ove zemlje dvije muslimanke uspjele su dobiti dovoljan broj glasova za ulazak Kongres.
To je uspjelo Rashidi Tlaib, Amerikanki palestinskog porijekla, i Ilhan Omar, čije je porijeklo iz Somalije.
Tlaib je pobijedila u 13. kongresnom okrugu savezne države Michigan, gdje je bila jedina kandidatkinja iz redova velikih stranaka, dok je Omar slavila u petom kongresnom okrugu Minnesote, jakom uporištu Demokratske stranke, gdje je zamijenila prvog kongresmena muslimana Keitha Ellisona.
On je oslobodio mjesto u Kongresu kako bi se takmičio za mjesto državnog tužitelja.
Rashida Tlaib ima 42 godine, rođena je u Detroitu, a njeni roditelji su imigranti iz Palestine. Ušla je u historiju 2008. godine, kada je osvojila mjesto u zakonodavstvu Michigena i postala prva muslimanka koja je to uspjela.

Ona navodi kako je politički život počela odlascima na skupove lokalne Demokratske farmerske radničke stranke sa djedom nakon što je došla u SAD.
Izbor ove dvije dame u Zastupnički dom američkog Kongresa dešava se u vrijeme raširenih negativnih osjećaja Amerikanaca prema američkim muslimanima.

Studija koju su prošle sedmice objavili fondacija New America i Institut američkih muslimana navodi kako dva od pet Amerikanaca smatraju da islam nije u skladu s američkim vrijednostima te kako sličan broj ispitanih vjeruje da muslimani nisu jednake patriote kao drugi građani.
Organizacije za zaštitu prava američkih muslimana navode kako velika količina antiislamske retorike dolazi od medija, kao i od političkih struktura države. Istražitelji su ustanovili kako ljudi koji se identificiraju kao republikanci imaju više negativnih stavova prema islamu i muslimanima.
Drugo nedavno istraživanje, koje je objavila organizacija Muslim Advocates, ustanovilo je kako je više od 80 političkih kandidata na raznim nivoima koristilo antiislamsku retoriku prošle i ove godine.
