Na 28. Generalnoj konferenciji UNESCO-a održanoj u Parizu 1995. godine donesena je odluka da 23. aprila svake godine obilježava Svjetski dan knjige i autorskih prava, kao simboličan datum u svjetskoj književnosti jer su na taj dan 1616. godine umrli Miguel de Cervantes i William Shakespeare.
Prema informacijama koje je prikupio novinar Anadolije iz Svjetskog indeksa kulture čitanja, na listi zemalja čiji stanovnici najviše čitaju prednjači Indija, a prate je Tajland i Kina.
Indeks mjerenja temelji se na vremenu izdvojenom za čitanje tokom jedne sedmice, a u to se pored knjiga, ubraja i čitanje novina, magazina i drugog pisanog materijala.
Prva na listi zemalja čija su društva posvećena knjizi nalazi se Indija, a svaki njen stanovnik u prosjeku sedmično na čitanja izdvaja 10 sati i 42 minute. Na drugom mjestu je Tajland sa 9 sati i 24 minute po stanovniku, dok je na trećem mjestu Kina. Svaki Kinez za čitanje sedmično izdvaja 8 sati.
Prve tri zemlje na listi prate Filipini (7 sati i 36 minuta), Egipat (7 sati i 30 minuta), Češka (7 sati i 24 minuta), Švedska (7 sati i 6 minuta), Francuska (6 sati i 54 minuta), Mađarska (6 sati i 48 minuta) te Saudijska Arabija (6 sati i 48 minuta).
Kada je riječ o najčitanijim knjigama na prvom mjestu je Kur'an, zatim Evanđelje, a na trećem mjestu je knjiga “Citati Mao Zedonga”.
Među najčitanijim knjigama u svjetskoj književnosti su i “Don Kihot” autora Miguela Cervantesa, te Harry Potter britanske književnice JK Rowling.
